Jets, the artist, did a GREAT job splitting the layers!

All top cylinders are encased in deformers, and the sides are glued to them. layer order is mostly done via inverse clipping, and finer details are done manually

I came up with a crude linkage mechanism for digit articulation using current tech (micro-pneumatic cylinders) before my computer and brain exploded and I died RIP. I wanted to render an animation but my computer just isn't strong enough.

Cool! I sketched out that section a little more but if you want to go a different direction I'd be curious to see where you took it. The bolt is basically a flywheel and the awkward part would have a dustcover over it that's like two cylinders intersecting.
