What does any of that have to do with Walt Kelly's humble possum, Pogo? Pogo first appeared, not in comic strips, but in the pages of Dell Comics, and only later found fame in syndicated strips.

Napoleon and Uncle Elby by Clifford McBride

The comic strip launched in 1932 and was widely syndicated over about 3 decades, well past McBride's death in 1951. Napoleon was kinda an Irish wolfhound (probably named from 'Elby' being like "Elba")
