A notable work of his was Rue Transnonain (1834) - he intended the profits from it to support the freedom of the press. The police discovered a copy & set about confiscating every available print. Such persecution was Daumier’s lot.

He was born in London into a working class family & was home-schooled by his father with an emphasis on Classics & Religion. The former inspired him, whereas the latter put him off for life. Self-Portrait (1834)

He died in 1837, aged 60. Nowadays it is his oil sketches, which were done directly from nature, & his cloud studies which are most respected. They have a vivacity & truthfulness which is outstanding. View of Highgate (c1834), Stonehenge (1836) & View from Highgate Hill (nd)

As the years progressed Martin’s ability for the sublime appeared to increase. His skies pound the canvases with fury! Fallen Angels in Hell (1841), Assuaging of the Waters (c1834-40), Destruction of Tyre (1840), Joshua Commanding the Sun to Stand Still (1840) & Solitude (1843)

It’s fascinating to see a Martin blockbuster applied to the Coronation. It’s likely his royal friends were delighted but to modern eyes the doll-like figures seem strangely butterfly-like. The Deluge (1834), Manfred & Alpine Watch (1837) & The Coronation of Queen Victoria (1839)

Witham in Essex for me today 🚛

Seen here through the years...1834..1901...and today.

Witham...stands between Colchester and London so this road was almost certainly first built by the Romans 2000 yrs ago.

With ham...how i like my eggs 😄

Have a good day all.

Beautiful painting by Charles Carter mole (1834-1900) for sale on eBay. Depiction of a scene from the court of Edward VI. Edward Seymour is also seen and Catherine Parr kneeling beside the young king. Just a shame I don't have twenty thousand to buy it. 😃
