Grinling Gibbons died #onthisday in 1721. Walpole wrote of this master wood carver, "[Only Gibbons] gave wood the loose and airy lightness of flowers, and chained together the various productions of the elements with the free disorder natural to each species.” #gloriousGeorgians
If you are looking for something to do this weekend, take a trip to Emo Court in Co Laois. Magnificent Georgian architecture, lush parklands and our contemporary still-life exhibition 'In Living Memory'. Artworks L-R, David Eager Maher, Florian Slotawa, Samuel Walsh.
Georgian satires - coloured etchings of grotesque characters - are iconic artworks. Many were political; yet witchcraft and magic also featured.
'The Dog & the Devil' (1807) depicts a magician's assistant, who dressed up as a devil to fool a client, but was attacked by his dog.
The first women's #cricket match took place #onthisday in 1745, when the villages of Bramley and Hambledon met. Hambledon claimed the victory and The Mercury reported that, "The girls bowled, batted, ran and catches as well as most men could do in that game." #gloriousGeorgians

long ago I had this phase where I really wanted to learn more about my country's mythology. I can't say that went anywhere but there's an interesting character called a Devi in Georgian myths and fairy tales, kind of a horned giant, can be good or evil and I really like them so..
Emma, Countess of Mount Edgcumbe (1729-1807) was a famously plain Georgian Lady. But she was proud of the fact that she had 'no common face', as she told the painter Joshua Reynolds. Emma featured in many caricatures, including one as a toad-commanding witch.
