Much is made of Tolkien's sparse use of female characters in LOTR, but I believe this was a kindness of sorts. Tolkien was inspired by the Saga of the Volsungs, which has more female characters than LOTR, but he was careful in how he used its feminine archetypes in his own work..

It is interesting to me how many of John Howe's early paintings of Tolkien seem much more "conventionally fantasy" than both the film he eventually helped produce & the books. You have soldiers in plate armour, Medieval-esque castles, rangers that look straight out of Sherwood!

There are dark elves in multiple works of fiction, with Pirotess from "Record of Lodoss War" and Yao from "Gate: Thus the JSDF Fought There" being just two examples.
