- Give them colors that contrast with the overall bg color
- Make the bg faded, tinted, or desaturated in comparison
- Keep the bg extra-simple
- Use overlaying textures to unify the bg

A3 With photo references, you have to use a perspective grid to add/change the background details, or else they'll really stick out as wrong.

With something less detailed/elaborate, you can get away with eyeballing it.
