This breaks in situations where lines have variable width.
I'm not this sort of programmer, but I have an idea for an algorithmic solution. Map the whole lineart with pixel-fills and 'vector grow' every area at the same rate across the white gaps under the lines, until they meet.

I think about this a lot. Visibility is always a struggle. Currently my focus is on getting more titles out. The more titles, the wider the net. I have a theory that longer series chains are more likely to be algorithmically recommenced but no data there yet.
