The end result in SMB 1 is a Master stage (pictured below) that's nigh impossible to complete without just jumping past half the stage, and what was originally going to be a Master stage, was slapped at the start of a lighter difficulty.

A little proof to my theory. In finding these sprites tonight I came across the prototype version of SMB2. Mario shares the same eyes as his Mario 3 sprite, as does Peach, right down to her pink eyes. They were also each 3 colors, as opposed to 4 in the final game.
