As a writer, it can be hard not overdoing a gag that you really like, but you have to keep in mind that only doing it on OCCASION means it'll have more impact on the reader.

I LOVE the bottom panel B-plot "comic strip" gag, but we've only done it twice.

I like to have one or two big ‘simple’ shapes in a panel to dominate the reader’s interest. Could be characters, or props etc. Somewhere for the eye to look get information, to see drama. Then a different shape (configuration) in the next panel.
