This started as a three value study, then nine values, followed by a bit of in-between shading for the final render. It appears to be a good way of getting to realism without spending hours on details.

Tails has stuck with me since Sonic 2. He's a tech archetype but he's incredibly humble. That combination is pretty cool. Plus he can fly with his tails. I always thought that was a pretty interesting feature about his design.
