I always look to Darwyn Cooke and see how he placed those bold shapes in the foreground to block the crowd, but also set the scene and add depth. Then draw a few midground important characters, and then loosely sketch in a background crowd.

This countryside vista is based on a view from Cleveland Way in the North Yorkshire Moors. I interpreted the distant fields using a variety of textures! The whole scene is bathed in a pinky golden light with a tapestry of heather in the foreground.

The first version of this shot and the latest version. There can really only be one focal point at a time, and blurring/enlarging Takamori in the foreground makes you more focused on Ina in the BG. That and moving Ame further into the back creates a feeling of depth and space.

By adventurous, I mean taking what you do, by apply a good twist on it. A few ideas that crossed my mind would include lineless art, having more dynamic cute poses, using limited colors, having a more pronounced foreground, or perhaps something in a theme we would not expect.
