I usually do cell shading, and some soft erasing. Making it a gray tone, either warm or cool depending on the colors underneath and the lighting of a scene. I turn the color layer off so it's just the line art, paint the color in, set it to multiply and lower the opacity.

just thought these comparisons were neat lmao. I do a lot of grey sketches with a few colored details and then use a 50% opacity gradient map to figure out the rest for me

w/ fran I used colors beneath to maintain cool/warm temperatures and make gold tones where I wanted them

First I start drawing the tear outlines with a dark color

Then I lower the opacity of the layer until it looks good (usually around 15%)

Then I start adding strong highlights in a new layer

Finally I add some slight shadows with a multiply layer

It makes my lineart more soft since I do really hard clean lineart and was a huge improvement for me to use this technique last year
Also, sometimes I low it opacity and other times, I don’t. But also I ser it in multiply mode!

Base tone, dark tone then darker tone.

If ur going for something more complex than a chibi, put the base color on 50% opacity and mix it with blue (50% opacity) to do the reflection of the light on the hair

Mess with opacity until you like it
