This is probably an old trick, but if you import one of those classic UV Maps as a hair texture in Vroid Studio, it might help you decide where to place your highlights, gradients, and different colored streaks?

A 3D program will get you close, but another hour doing paint-over will take it to ANOTHER level. I import my render into , and paint in atmosphere, details, wear and tear, highlight focal points, get painterly marks everywhere, adjust light, etc. Example below 👇
