I dont really have an answer for you but netflix has been stepping it up in this regard. I'd still prefer it if a male character from the main cast was in a relationship but these couples are portrayed in a very positive light, and that is a good step.

Day 18: Favorite Male Player Character.
Mine is Red :) a lot of it is nostalgia, and he is portrayed as super strong. Also in gen one I didn't have a female option lol so I was forced to go with Red and maybe that's another reason he resonated with me more.
