Most of my ocs have simplistic designs which makes it easy to draw by memory
The only times where I'd use refs is when I need to get a character's colour scheme and sometimes double checking for accuracy
But yea, a lot of times, I don't use refs often for my ocs-

Color schemes that go spectacularly well with the TMNT crossover skins: Esports v.1/Skyforged on Leonardo; Soul Fire/Synthwave on Donatello, Black/Esports v.2 on Raphael; Haunting/Heatwave on Michelangelo. Not to mention Verdant Bloom and Lucky clover which fits them all.

I love Samus's suit design for Dread

Fusion's wasn't my favorite looking suit but it has some really cool design bits, and Dread's looks to take my favorite bits from Fusion's, while mashing it with the Varia suit and giving it an AMAZING color scheme.

I'm in love.

What's your favorite Clone Trooper armor design based purely on the appearance?

For me, I'd have to go with Commander Wolffe. Along with his unique visor, I love the color scheme and paint job of his armor. Plus the cybernetic eye he has underneath his helmet is really neat too.
