i always find it fascinating whenever jamie actively draws objects/animals/backgrounds in his gorillaz stuff post-phase 3 since usually he goes down the collage route. not sure which i prefer, but it's always a novelty seeing things other than the characters drawn

Actually, an interesting way to have taken it, would be to leave the people as character-based objects, so no code needs to be changed for the fighting and movement. But make all the doorways and archways sprites. You'd need a multiplexor but minimal change to the game-code IMHO.

you literally Cannot punch certain objects unless this thing on the left is at 3 hearts or more

you gain 1 heart by hitting an object, lose 1 by hitting it early or late, and a miss depletes it completely. literally no other minigame does this.
