I’m saying that because it feels like all the “that’s not shojo manga!” / “that’s not appropriate for all-ages readers” discussions is about helping overseas manga readers find books that they’ll love, & the shojo/shonen/josei/seinen labels are in flux now & aren’t always helpful

Is it more useful to overseas readers to discover manga they might like if we classify them by readers’ gender? By age rating (all ages, teens, older teens or age 18+)? By story genre (romance, sci-fi, fantasy, horror)? Or combos like “mature romance” or “all-ages fantasy”?

All of this is just to say that age/gender-based manga genre classifications aren’t as strictly defined as overseas readers might want or expect them to be. Knowing the original intended target audience in JP can provide helpful context, but it’s evolving as we speak
