I think I was still gunning for the flame/smoke/clouds starter angle, then masking some basic shapes using old pen and paper artwork to generate some interesting bits.

YO, I did a lil doodle of your idea and provided an alternative if you wanna take a look. If you wanted just a liiiittle bit of a second color I'd think about maybe adding it on the fleshy bits like paw beans and nose (and eyes if you want a bit more)
