Loved the #miltonavery exhibition @royalacademy. Such deceptive simplicity! Particularly appreciated his use of under-drawing to texture thin layers of paint (eg hair in March in Brown (1954) & contours in Reclining Blonde (1959)) - stunning all around!

Hollywood actor Alex Nicol (1916-2001) starred in two Hammer noirs: The House Across the Lake (aka Heat Wave, 1954) and Face the Music (aka The Black Glove, 1955). Neither was a horror, but he did go on to direct his own film in the genre - The Screaming Skull (1958).
