Beware of the #IdesofMarch. On this day in 44 BCE Julius Caesar, a Roman general and statesman was assassinated by about 40 Roman senators. Caesar's death resulted in a long series of civil wars that ended in the death of the Roman Republic and the birth of the Roman Empire.

#FrescoFriday | A fresco from the Villa of the Mysteries in #Pompeii.
Dating to c. 1st century BCE, it may depict a woman being initiated into the Dionysian mysteries. Her direct gaze gives a striking sense of realism.

Call me old fashioned, but an animal hero I often turn to is Aesop’s quiet Tortoise, who shakes off the Hare’s cocky bravado. Some of Aesop’s life may be apocryphal, but as a 7thc bce former Greek slave, he knew pain & struggle —often his underdogs won the day 🐢 #WyrdWednesday

#FrescoFriday A vividly hopeful scene from the villa of Agrippa Posthumus @ Boscotrecase (1st c. BCE): a pale Andromeda embraces her fate: as a terrifying beast emerges from a dark blue sea, windswept Perseus arrive to save the day! 🧵

"Hide n' seek" might be one of the oldest games in the world, dating back to the 2nd century BCE. In Greece, it was called "apodidraskinda", and played much the same way we play it today.
It may be that it teaches young children to hunt, track, and yes, hide.

Painting for my worldbuilding! Urge to paint something for myself was irresistable.
Hebrew Judge, 13th Century BCE. Judges were zealous tribal leaders, guiding their people in times of crisis.
Any thoughts are appreciated, thanks for looking!

The ancient Greek thymiateria were used in private & public rituals of the 7th C BCE – 4th C CE, and includes 17 main types of censers.
I get interested in one particular type shown in the Hellenistic relief from Panticapaeum, today Kerch #Crimea early 4th C BCE.

12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS - DAY 9
🎶 On the ninth day of #Christmas my true love sent to me...
nine ladies #dancing.... 🎶
OK, there are only eight of them, but aren't these Peucetian women (from modern Apulia, late 5th to early 4th century BCE) doing an excellent job?
