The Celts equated hazelnuts with wisdom and poetic inspiration, suggested by the similarity between the Gaelic word for the nuts, 'cno', and the word for wisdom, 'cnocach'.

Purchased in 2017 for the museum collection, this atmospheric oil painting 'Storm over Blencathra' by award winning Cumbrian artist Kate Bentley captures this time of year perfectly.

Michael Scot, 'the Wizard' (1175-1232), was an alchemist, astrologer, mathematician and translator.
