Inspired by the publication of William Gilpin’s 'picturesque tour’ of the Lake District in 1772, Francis Towne toured Ambleside in Cumbria in 1786 painting a number of versions of the secluded waterfalls of Stock Gill. Two figures on the bottom left rock provide a sense of scale.

'Ambleside,' (1786) is a particularly good example of Francis Towne's very flat, economical, ‘modern’ watercolours. He was rejected by the Royal Academy 11 times for membership but despite this successfully lived and worked outside of London’s influence.
