Picture Puffin book number 46. A Children's Alphabet designed and drawn by Grace Gabler @ 1945. Gabler was in Ambleside during WW2, where the Royal College of Art had decamped from London. Her friend designed wooden blocks for her degree piece whilst Grace designed this book.

'Ambleside,' (1786) is a particularly good example of Francis Towne's very flat, economical, ‘modern’ watercolours. He was rejected by the Royal Academy 11 times for membership but despite this successfully lived and worked outside of London’s influence.

I suspect this exact place! Close to the Ferry House and "adjoining the roads to Hawkshead and Ambleside", although description could also mean further north on any of the other spots with adjoining roads. She was told about it, she didn't walk there so.... could be anywhere.
