Some of the good starting points would be OVAs like Gundam 8th MS Team, Gunbuster, Mazinkaiser and the Getter Robo OVAs which are short but very enjoyable.

Other good recommendations are series like Big O, GaoGaiGar, SSSS.Gridman, Dynazenon, Gurren Lagann & Code Geass.
