À leurs débuts, nos deux héros n'ont pas encore tout à fait leur physique définitif. Mortimer emprunte les traits de Jacques Van Melkebeke (la barbe en plus) et Blake ceux de Jacques Laudy, deux proches amis peintres de Jacobs et d'Hergé, travaillant pour le journal Tintin.
