Today is Kamen Rider Black's 34th Anniversary. The manga was my first contact with Shotaro Ishinomori's work and left a huge impact on me. Here's some of the artwork I've done for the series over the years!

oh, Mazinger Z! that's a Go Nagai giant robot series -- i think it used to be on TV in Hawaii back in the day. My cousin had one of those giant toys. I'm still more of an Ishinomori fan (Kamen Rider), but Mazinger Z is an old fave too.

That's because Keiji Inafune made Blues based on both Joe from Cyborg 009 & Hakaider's human form from Android Kikaider, which is another series made by the creator of Cyborg 009 Shotaro Ishinomori. Kikaider has 2 anime series too.

They were series that he grew up with as a kid.

Here's a redesign I did for fun of Akemi from Shotaro Ishinomori's adaptation of Matango. She's not in the movie, I speculate she was a composite character based on the main female cast in order to simplify the story to better fit the manga format.

a reminder, before American comics actually pushed for diversity, Japanese manga was doing it first such as Shotaro Ishinomori's 1964 manga, Cyborg 009.

The manga also popularized the concept of a superhero team in Japanese pop culture.
