Françoise Thérèse de Choiseul-Stainville, Princesse Joseph de Monaco, was guillotined in Paris on this day in 1794. She was one of the last victims of the Terror, for Robespierre and his coterie would be executed the next day. (I have a chapter about her in my upcoming book.)

Today's Vigée Le Brun portrait is of Marie Antoinette's friend Blanche Charlotte Marie Félicité de Narbonne-Pelet, Maréchale-Comtesse de Mailly (1761-1840). The Comtesse's husband was guillotined in 1794 & she very nearly shared his fate but was saved by the fall of Robespierre.

Oxford, 1926. A furious red velvet coat for the chaos of the beginning of term, for a morning on the fall of Robespierre, followed by lunch with the Warden, for moorhens & Mongolian limes in University Parks &, as evening casts melancholy, this ridiculous duel by the river reeds.
