If you've never read Waid's Superman: Birthright, I highly recommend it. It's Superman's origin story for the modern age. It's the film that the writers behind Man of Steel sat down and adapted ... without quite wondering how their changes might impact what the story means.

I know Johns did a lot of retconning to combine Superman's pre and post Crisis elements, but Clark not having any friends at the Planet while still being married to Lois feels clunky IMO
