The kelpie is a large aquatic predator native to the oceans and waterways around Britain and northern Europe. The function of the long main and tail hair is unknown but possibly is used as camouflage, as the Kelpie is an ambush predator.

In Scottish lower mythology, a water spirit that lives in many rivers and lakes. Kelpies are mostly hostile to humans. They appear as a horse grazing by the water, offering its back to the traveler and then pulling him into the water.
