"The Mitten" is a Ukrainian folktale about a lost mitten and the various forest creatures who decide to make it their home. In some tellings the mitten bursts, but in others the animals leave and the owner recovers his lost garment.

Norwegian artist Theodor Kittelsen, who was best known for his illustrations of trolls, died in 1914. He gained fame when he was commissioned by folklore enthusiasts Peter Christen Asbjørnsen & Jørgen Moe to illustrate an edition of Norwegian Folktales.
