I dunno if it looks as good as it could, but I try to incorporate a lot of gradients! and when the design doesn't call for that, I let the lineart get really chunky to show contact and drop shadows so everything pops even with flat colors

The animated stuff here is pretty simple, just some looping gradients (scaled up strands here for clarity), then some sections are masked out randomly so it's not repetitive, and faded out at the ends

Don't worry, there are brushes for that and like the trunk, make gradients with several different green colours.
