Dunno if they are that good but I mostly use gradients, some shine accents and line weight
Also I think it’s good to use “mist”, f.e make some things that are far from the viewer less saturated, I just paint them with background color

I dunno if it looks as good as it could, but I try to incorporate a lot of gradients! and when the design doesn't call for that, I let the lineart get really chunky to show contact and drop shadows so everything pops even with flat colors

The animated stuff here is pretty simple, just some looping gradients (scaled up strands here for clarity), then some sections are masked out randomly so it's not repetitive, and faded out at the ends
