My Favourite C64 Platformers No.16

Hercules

Interdisc 1984

Yes, the graphics are atrocious. And the sound is awful. But, play it for more than ten minutes, and you’ll be hooked. Brilliantly designed and super addictive, Hercules may look and sound 💩 but it plays brilliantly.

Jet Set Willy

Software Projects 1984

This early free-roaming platformer was also one of the first 64 games I played. Like the Speccy original, it's rather buggy, but good fun. Surreal, amusing, & yet oddly melancholic, it's certainly unique.

Booga-Boo The Flea

Quicksilva 1984

Another innovative game that involved lots of jumping, BB is a cool little title that I’ve always had a soft spot for as it was one of the first games I played on the C64. Simple but addictive and good fun.

Yeah. I read bits in the C64 addendum booklet that specified things in the manual that the C64 version didn't have. But it was the auto-saves and continual disk-swapping that made me give up on it. Too much loading, not enough game.

But I can play any version of the game now. 😁

My Favourite C64 Platformers No.20

Creatures 1/2 & Mayhem in Monsterland

Let me explain. These are clearly 3 of the 64's best platformers, but I never played them BITD. They’re all amazing, so I couldn’t not mention them, & if I'd had a 64 in the 90s, they’d all be top 5.

I had Ultima VI too. But disappointed with the C64 version. The instructions mentioned things that had been cut-out of the C64 port. In game there's no music, or even sound. The interface was slow. *So* much loading. And only one disk-drive supported, so lots of disk swapping 😐

Not to mention the other many cool retro games he's made. Monsters of Terror is still one of my favourites. A port of Wizard of Wor, with AGA graphics, and up to four human and/or CPU players. (And digitised C64 sound effects, for that extra retro feel.) 😎

It does.
Tricky to get the two player screenshots. (NZ is such a low population country, I found it difficult to find another human to join-in.) 😉 But my ambidextrous control of two sheriff's went quite well.

It even has a high-score table, which I don't think the C64 one had.
