Danbei, Junpei, Goemon, and Naojiro were all originally from Go Nagai's The Abashiri Family manga. The lead character, Kikunosuke, was a model for Honey. Producer Toshio Katsuta has mentioned he was influenced by "Abashiri", but also "Harenchi Gakuen" while developing "Honey".
