In Greek mythology, Iris is the goddess of the rainbow. Flowers from this genus come in a rainbow of hues. We've selected some of our favorite Iris from "Curtis's Botanical Magazine" in honor of Find these and more in Flickr ➡️ https://t.co/oXpEqb17g4

Sirens and mermaids. Mermaids are a sort of sea nymph with a fish tail who save sailors; but for the Greeks, Sirens were bird-like, um, beauties, who lured them to their doom. Below are from the Bestiary of Anne Walshe (https://t.co/SXENjc1UMk)

In the Iliad, Poseidon drives a chariot drawn by "brazen-hoofed horses over the sea's surface."

Apollonius said the horses of Poseidon emerged from the sea & galloped across the Libyan sands.

Part horse / part fish: HIPPOCAMPUS.

- Mermaids or Sirens are part human/part fish. They appear in the adventure novel THE ODYSSEY (8th century BC). Famously re-imagined by Andersen, Lovecraft, Disney... and David Bruckner for a segment of the excellent 2012 anthology movie "V/H/S"

In Greek myth, the legendary sea monster Scylla was once a lovely naiad. One story says she was coveted by the sea god Poseidon & transformed by a romantic rival. In another story, she was admired by the sea god Glaucus & transformed by the sorceress Circe.

In Airships of Aruna, there are some strange carnivorous creatures called Sirens that roam the skies to lure sailors from airships to their doom. They are unsurprisingly based off of the original Greek myth of sirens.

OOPS forgot to post here

“atropos”
Ink. Gouache

In Greek Mythology, Atropos was one of the Moirai, the three Goddesses of Fate and Destiny. Clotho would spin the thread of life, Lachesis would measure, and Atropos would cut it. She was the “Inevitable.” All things have an end.
