The Obol was an ancient greek coin made of bronze, copper or silver and popular for funerary use. Deceased were buried with obol coins in their mouth to pay the ferryman Charon for the passage across the rivers Styx or Acheron.

In Greek mythology, Charon is the ferryman of Hades who conveys souls of the newly deceased across the rivers Styx & Acheron that separated the world of the living from that of the dead. It was customary to pay a coin for safe passage.
