Absence of very large penguins today is likely due to the Oligo-Miocene radiation of marine mammals.

Ovatiovermis was described recently-ish, from the Burgess Shale. It ate dust.

#FossilFriday #OnThisDay The Neandertal skull Amud-1 was found in 1961, highly compressed and fragmented. Dated 50-70 ka. Cranial capacity 1736 cc!! (largest among Neandertals)

I've been thinking a lot about pterosaurs this week, so here's #paleoart of two Thalassodromeus for #FossilFriday. Thalassodromeus had a very odd skull, even for a pterosaur: weird jaws, huge crest, and expanded jaw muscle space.

#FossilFriday The human hemimaxilla from Misliya Cave, dated to 177 to 194 ka. Members of the Homo sapiens clade left Africa earlier than previously thought (90-120 ka). From Hershkovitz I. (2018) The earliest modern humans outside Africa.
Macro lens proving its worth for tiny dino bits. Some close-ups on the teeth of two Lesothosaurus specimens @NHM_London. These cute little gnashers would have been slicing up plants (and maybe small prey) some 200 million years ago in what’s now Lesotho #NHMdino #FossilFriday

New at #Patreon: slightly revised version of my recent Mosasaurus #paleoart, now with fewer knobbly bits after feedback from folks who know more about mosasaurs than I do. See and download this image (and loads more) in high res for just $1: https://t.co/Q8peLr2501 #FossilFriday

Yesterday was #WorldTurtleDay but today is #FossilFriday so here's some turtles. They are very challenging at first but ultimately very rewarding #paleoart subjects. Here's Odontochelys, Alienochelys & Ocepechelon, Idiochelys, & Meiolania 🐢✨
Just in time for #FossilFriday : a now coloured version of my #Plant #Evolutionary #Tree (a very basic one of course) which I've been meaning to do for months. But I finally decided to finish it as it goes perfectly along with a certain #blog post which should be out real soon!😉
For #FossilFriday, the recently named Suskityrannus hazelae! This small tyrannosaur was found in New Mexico. A reconstructed skeleton has been on display @AzMNH for years, but is now joined by this beautiful (fuzzy!) life restoration by Benji Paysnoe. 🦖
