Sylviornis was a bird with uncertain affinities that lived on the island of New Caledonia. It survived until around 3,000-4,000 years ago, though it may have survived through Kanak oral storytellings as a bird known simply as the “Du”. A legend never dies!

Today I’ve been writing about one of the coolest groups of theropod dinosaurs, the penguins.🐧🦖

This is the foot of a giant penguin called Anthropornis grandis. It is roughly 36–38 million years old & was collected from Seymour Island, Antarctica.
