Actually, an interesting way to have taken it, would be to leave the people as character-based objects, so no code needs to be changed for the fighting and movement. But make all the doorways and archways sprites. You'd need a multiplexor but minimal change to the game-code IMHO.

Bluethroat & Shore Crab - amusing incident from my notebook. On the edge of the saltmarsh the Bluethroat darted from bush to bush & in the process startled a young Shore Crab that had been left stranded by the tide. The crab reacted to the movement by going into full threat mode!
