Oh, I might as well share this too since I did it today. I already take care when designing characters so they have variations in shape, colour, depth, placement, etc, but every once in a while I sit down to draw different shapes from different angles,
expressions and colours.

WIP. Lagi and Mizu have proven me that leviathans are the hardest to translate into the pokemon style, at least for me. Very difficult to reach that "these shapes are definitely x monster" energy on them

Thank you Psychonauts for inspiring me to go completely wild with shapes and colors and lines I've been having SO much fun. https://t.co/qyHJB6xsS4

As many many of you know Alex (and I as the writer) are all about trans. You know, being a shapeshifter and all. I mean just look at this pudgy boi and tell me that isn't something youd wanna snuggle for days on end! Huge thanks to , an incredible trans artist.

I usually start with a trapezoid while the top and bottom sides indicate the shoulder and hip. Then I draw those negative shapes around the waist to show which side the torso turns to and finish structures of chest, shoulders and pelvis. The pic is a study on Yoshinari's work

Another WIP. This one started with me messing for the first time with some AI stuff, and even though it's not really my thing, I saw in one some shapes that were really interesting and calling me, so used it as starting point for something new emerging from it...

Next up, time to cut out the shapes for the base metal bits and floor.

Lumineb's Human Disguise. She's not very good at her race's shapeshifting power, she can't hide her tail or her audial receptors, though she was able to imitate human hands and feet. Her fashion sense distracts people from the tail.

There isn't enough geo to support the shapes and the design is undercooked but I think these tools could be a really nice part of my concept workflow, especially in regards to making 3D roughs for prototyping. RizomUV (among others) makes UVs pretty painless.

The Largest forms/silhouettes tend to be the "First Read". Translation: The large shapes deliver the large story. This makes them super important to design-with-care.

This is probably going to be the last WIP, but I just wanted to show how shapes/colors come together with some persistence! Still rough (too muted + murky), but it's progress!

Since I use Paint, I can't really think in terms of layers, which is interesting.

Quickly made a cargo container on wheels I had already planned out for a panel, but re-did it with these new primitive shapes.

I like how you can pick whatever color you want for them, and adjust how many lines show up on them to best guide your drawing.

a lot of the masks have the lower fangs SO i put them on the top instead as horns, along with just bigger, 'friendlier' shapes like the comma - eyes; there'll still be sharp edges, but it's not as aggressive as ... these ... (credit to lastlabryinth @ tumblr!)

when I was a kid, one of my favourite books was on speculative zoology/evolution. I loved the illustrations, the concepts, the shapes and colors. I borrowed it so often and for so long from school they had to chase me up on returning it several times -
