As a kid I did something like that. You had the base color, albino for pale colorations, "melanite" which resulted in darker colorations, Inversions, which swapped key colors then exotic, for fun. each type had a shiny version that did the same color shifts in the new palette.

Converting the state-of-the-art arcade game to an 8-bit micro was never going to be easy, yet C64 Out Run is fast & initially good fun. However, the ropey controls & linear gameplay (you can’t pick a route) are disappointing.
