The first anime I watched was Sailor Moon back on the 90s, based on a manga released in 91. It features these two, a gay couple who were portrayed sincerely. Later they would add two lesbian main characters.
This is when western TV still made gay people mostly for comedic roles.

Though I will always recommend the JP original over the Western release. The US version cranked the difficulty up a LOT, changed a lot of character designs, and removed ALL dialogue (which is sometimes really cute and funny!) Thankfully a good translation patch was made by MIJET-
