I know our styles are very different but this could still help.
I don't actually use blending modes for shading. All of the colors are generally chosen and informed by the background and the light sources.
Basically, use tones from the background in your shadows to make them pop.

I was informed that the paint roller part was likely garbage for the hook coupler. it isn't a closed loop and has a lot of flexibility which would likely have it come undone. so i re-did the coupler and I think this one is a winner. My money is on the handlebar one being better.
