Ken was modeled after the real life martial artist/kickboxer Benny Urquidez, who gained popularity in Ikki Kajiwara's "Shikakui Jungle" manga.

This manga is a stealth sequel to the Karate Baka Ichidai manga by the same author, which inspired Ryu and Sagat.
