L'origine la plus probable est Charles L. Feltman, un immigrant allemand, boulanger à Brooklyn (New York), qui a eu en 1867 l'idée de faire fabriquer un chariot mobile lui permettant de griller des saucisses qu'il servait dans un pain (également réchauffé) …
