Excellent description! I just have one more thing to add: Kazuma Kaneko and his team are very good at heavy, but tasteful use of bounced light for rendering. They've been doing it long before it became a standard digital painting practice too. Blew my mind when I first saw it!

Made some good progress on this today, Cleaned up the character as well as adding some more layering elements to the foreground to add some depth. Really liking how it's coming together and I thing I'm ready for the final stretch of rendering.
