I can't for speak for everyone, but "diversity" these days seems to prioritize checklisting over storytelling. That's a recurring theme that limits projects, politics.

Some anime, have diversity that works with story. It works, for diversity in itself isn't the selling point:

I finally finished PROVIDENCE by Alan Moore & . It is a paragon of comic book storytelling. Genius structure, genuinely scary, and injects the Lovecraft mythos with refreshing new meaning. What Watchmen did for superheroes, Providence does for Lovecraft.
