Not all Megaloceros were giants, M. matritensis from Spain was a red deer-sized form adapted to warmer climates. Its antlers weren't as palmated, but the antler structure is the same. It probably evolved from the Central European species M. savini.

Funny enough, there was going to be a Popeye stand in for the show. Meet Barnacle Bill!
He sadly was cut from the show, but he eventually evolved into Barnacle Boy. He was later introduced in the SpongeBob comics. They even referenced that he was originally Mermaid Man's friend.
