I think going for a(n unsaturated) color instead of gray can make the cyan pop a bit more, that or going for a hue similar to the BG to bring Jet & Co. back a bit.

well here's the layers I used lol, red shading is set to multiply, yellow light is set to dodge/add, and the blue ambient light is set to normal

the key is to use more saturated light at the edges, leave it thin at hard edges, and spread it out at soft edges

in general i've found i like dark, saturated reds and blues together. i used to use that a lot when i was more fashionable too.
