Two different styles. I always have done both. Both is trying out the medium and brushes. The first is fun bc I paint, adding and adding, until I feel it is in balance. Then stop. Second is very planned before I start and is finished when that plan is fulfilled.

adding in details and continuing the feel of the concept in areas it doesn't show is a very important step to really tie the entire 3d piece together, as 3D artists we gotta interpret what the concept is not just recreate it ^_^

My advice is, work small, like, zoomed out, so you won't get distracted by adding details too early on in the process, and always keep in mind the bigger picture, what your artwork is about.

A lot of the work was also done by the particle system, I didn’t abstract the clumps into single planes, instead I just played around with the settings. By adding multiple particle systems with different parameters, you can simulate different strokes like the following 4/4
