Fixed the aliasing in my previous solution for directional lighting. Went from a 2d solution that closely mirrored the raycasting of the display function to a 3d solution that looks at the amount of absorptive material between each voxel and the light source.
For a 40x40 directional brush, you'd want a 120x120 image. These options can be combined to make an animated directional brush, like "kuroneko" (black cat) or the squirrel. (The cat has two frames, the squirrel has three.)

I do. Sometimes if you have a lot of action coming from different directions its helpful to position things on a map to help visual how it would unfold.
