When doing backgrounds, it's important to get the rough shape and concept first. The concept doesn't have to look perfect.

This is the earliest mention I can find in "Making 3D in separate software" and it's answering a question pertaining to spell effects but it's pretty obvious they used this technique to backgrounds and tiles as well. There's also mention of "computer graphic research" in 1992
